What’s in a name?

When we think about our name, we generally don’t give it much attention. Maybe it was just a cool trend when our parents gave it to us. Or, maybe we were named after someone in our family. In our culture today, names are just a norm that is required for identification; however, in the past, it was a direct connection on our character.

For instance, in the Bible, Abraham (meaning father) and Sarah (meaning princess) named their son Isaac which means laughter. They named him this because the idea of having a son at their age made them laugh. Then there is Jacob. God changed his name to Israel which means to fight or struggle with God; and if we read on in the story, Israel often struggled with God.

So, what’s in a name? Today, our name becomes synonymous with our character. Our behaviors, whether helpful or problematic, define what people perceive when they hear our name. The great part is that we can change that! We can change the meaning of our name at anytime. All it takes is commitment to our values.
